In the long collaboration between Clara Andermatt and the composer João Lucas, there resonates a sense of complicity, nurtured by the interplay of expressive relationships between movement and music. ‘It Seems That the World’ is inspired by the book ‘Palomar’ by Italo Calvino, aiming to create a showcase that brings the audience closer to the world that observes and is observed. Like the book, the piece oscillates between three distinct planes: that of observation, that of narrative, and that of meditation. Combining intuition and methodical thought, in ‘It Seems That the World’ attention to things moves through the vastness of what seems to be—whether in broader relationships with the cosmos or the infinite, or within the more confined scope of daily observations, constructing symbols and meanings. From Calvino’s writing also arise multiple layers of interpretation, the premises for the creation of gesture and sound.
What motivates us, what drives us?An intimate, poetic, and provocative universe where the circus emerges as an expression of risk and challenge in the communication of the body and its movement. Juggling, object manipulation, and aerial acrobatics are some of the disciplines that make up this tragicomic contemporary circus show. Will we all be in the right place at the right time?
In the book, the world is observed in search of a systematic order for “the mute extension of things”; in the play, the mysterious intensity of the world is staged, placing each spectator in an observatory of their own experience.
The particular musical sound is created by a small family of plucked string instruments – a violin, a cello, and a double bass – which unfold into exploratory multiplicities, beyond their musical function – what they are as objects, what relationships they enable with the performers, with the stage space, and with the direction. At times, an electronic musical discourse is added to this acoustic environment, suggesting another, parallel place, and revealing itself only in specific moments.
